What qualifications do you need for child care work?
If you're thinking about a career in child care one of the first things you might ask yourself is: what qualifications am I going to need? The good news is that for many roles particularly when you’re first starting out in child care there are no formal entry requirements. You just need to be enthusiastic, patient and willing to learn how best to take care of children under your care.
However, you would be best advised to consider taking a course in child care to get a recognised qualification. In recent years the UK government has been moving more and more in the direction of requiring childcare workers to have a recognised qualification in child care, and this is more than likely going to continue into the future.
You could perhaps study part time whilst you work in a child care role or take a full time local college course, the choice depends on what best suits you.
During your training you will gain more work experience and learn the current best practices in child care and gain a nationally recognised qualification such as an NVQ in Child care or a CACHE Diploma.
There are many levels of qualifications that you could acquire, the one that's right for you depends on what experience you have. For example if you are a school leaver and have little or no experience in childcare then an entry foundation course would be the right choice for you.
But on the other hand if you already have experience with child care and would like to show this by gaining a recognised qualification then there are other options that could be right for you, for example by taking a course you could achieve an NVQ or CACHE diploma in a short space of time.
These days more and more employers are looking out for qualifications, and with most local college's running child care courses you are never too far away from improving your career opportunities by taking a child care course.
Once you have gained a nationally recognised childcare qualification no one can ever take that away from you, and it might just be a stepping stone to a more successful and rewarding future.
